Final Journey

Before you start your journey
across vast eternal space
pause a moment to consider
just what you are to face.

A lifetime spent in moments
of passion, joy, and grief,
drawing to its conclusion
having seemed so brief.

You do not know what waits
at your journey's end,
so cling desperately to surroundings
and to any precious friends.

Someone you cannot recognise,
may appear to guide you on your way,
no-one else present can see them,
but by your side they stay.

The Minister may pause beside you,
assuring with his prayers,
gently casting off the earthly bonds,
freeing, to ascend Heavens stairs.

All thoughts are with loved ones,
to you they mean so much,
how will they manage without you,
craving so, your touch?

Your future is eternal rest,
whilst theirs persistent grief,
how much they will come to depend
on hope of your professed belief.

Sorrow, regret, lamenting,
all that is left undone,
for words and deeds unhappy,
and for praises never sung.

All your debts are settled,
no earthly possessions now,
just the joy of a clear conscience
is all Heaven will allow.
