STRATEGY 1: THEME REINFORCEMENT
Aim : to explore creatively the strategy of Theme Reinforcement
Time : 20 - 30 minutes
Materials :
- Paper and art materials
- Blank postcards and pens
Introduction:
The themes and concepts of Protective Behaviours will be new to some people
and may take time to assimilate and put into practice. Theme Reinforcement
involves using a variety of methods to heighten awareness of the two themes
and encourage their use. The message is for adults, as well as for children
and young people. Each of us can reinforce the themes by being a role
model. Thinking about the way in which we do things and the language we
use can help in Theme Reinforcement.
Some people find it helpful to identify symbols as ways of remembering
the themes. Think of some of the powerful symbols used in advertising
to convey a message. See a black tick and you think
trainers.
See Pudsey Bear and you think
Children in Need.
- What symbols might you come up with for the first theme of Protective
Behaviours: We all have the right to feel safe all of the time?
- What could you use to remind you of the second theme : There is nothing
so awful that we can't talk about it with someone?
Activity suggestions:
- If you were to design your own poster for one of the themes, which
would it be and what symbols would you include?
- Look at the postcards created by a group in Brighton. On the back
of each design is a short message about feeling safe. If you were to
design your own postcard, what would you choose to make the maximum
impact and what would your message be based on what you have learned
about Protective Behaviours.
Epilogue:
Everyone learns at his or her own pace. We can encourage one another to
try to put these two themes into practice, but we cannot force anyone
to do so. The decision to put them into practice is a choice. There is
no blame attached to deciding that the time is not right to use the new
ideas or skills. Because we all have the right to feel safe all of the
time, we have the responsibility to help others feel safe too.
Possible adaptations or applications to the Church context:
- How did Jesus reinforce his message?
- Look at John 13. 1-17 The washing of the disciples' feet or Mark 9.
33-37 Who is the greatest?
- What do these passages say about Theme Reinforcement?
- Which is the most important part of the Christian message for you
at this moment? You might like to design a poster or postcard to illustrate
this.
