Severe Flood Risk for SheffordShefford's River Flit was once again in the "top two" of a severe risk of flood warning issued by the environment agency at 12.00 GMT on Friday 26th February 2010. The Flit was forecast to be at "severe risk" of flooding between Shefford and Biggleswade. The other severe risk of flood warning was issued for Chertsey Bourne, from Chertsey to Weybridge. East Anglia and the Midlands were forecast to have the worst problems, with a total of 126 flood warnings issued across the UK. It is worth noting that it was the RISK of a flood occurring that was forecast as severe, not the likely severity of any floods that may happen...
Heavy rain during Saturday 27th resulted in a rapid rise in the already high levels of our interconnected rivers, the Flit and the Hit, and standing water on the roads around Shefford made driving hazardous. Continuing rain on Sunday 28th , though, as at midday, not as heavy as forecast, resulted in the rivers continuing to rise. The Hit rose to within inches of the top of it's banks in some places, and the Flit actually burst it's banks at one point. With no rain since about 1pm on Sunday 28th, and a forecast of fine dry weather for Monday 1st March, it looks like Shefford has escaped any major flood problems this time around. the last time our rivers flooded gave us one of this web site's very first news items - click here to see what happened in January 2003...
