1st lent Lunch A Great Success
Saturday
9th February saw the first of a series of 6 Lent Lunches, organised by
Shefford Churches Working Together at Shefford's Community Hall
get off to a great start.
Over thirty people of all ages attended and enjoyed a superb
meal including a choice of six different home made soups served with bread,
cheese and biscuits, fruit, and tea or coffee.
Although no charge is made for these wonderful lunches,
donations were given towards the work of Christian Aid, and a table with
a comprehensive display of leaflets detailing the work of Christian Aid
was available.
John Harper gave a brief talk at
the end of the meal. He used an account of a holiday to Africa two years
ago where he had witnessed children digging for water in a dried up river
bed just 50 yards from the Safari Lodge he was staying in. The river had
dried up as a consequence of climate change, and John made the point that
simply giving to charity is no longer enough - we need to learn how to
live within the means of our planet so as not to disadvantage others in
ways that may not always be as immediately obvious as it was in his stark
experience...
