A Little About Them...

Click here to download and print the posterKaren and Lindsay are the keen beans of the quartet having both started playing when they were nine, whilst Elsa and Liz had a more leisurely start aged 10 and 12 respectively. Studying clarinet throughout our school years, we have, between us, lead the Nottingham Symphonic Winds, West Norfolk Jubilee Youth Orchestra, Lincolnshire Senior Wind Band and the Luton Youth Orchestra clarinet section. Spurred on to greater things, we each went on to study music – Karen and Lindsay officially as part of our degree courses and Elsa and Liz unofficially, as a very important sideline to their more sensible degrees in veterinary science and geography and geology: please don’t tell their tutors!

After graduation, Elsa began dissecting the notes in the Norfolk Reeds clarinet choir, but after unexpectedly performing with the group at her wedding, she cured all the pets in Norfolk and moved to Huntingdon where she is currently practicing as both a vet and a clarinettist with the Huntingdonshire Concert Band. Lindsay meanwhile left Luton for the big city lights of Sheffield, but couldn’t stay away, so returned to educate the next generation of Bedfordshire’s musical youth, whilst finding the time to play saxophones and flutes as well as clarinets in shows around the area. Lindsay is plumbing the depths of the clarinet quartet repertoire as our ace bass!

Karen ran away from the UK music scene early in her career to try her chances in the Australia. So wild was this experience, she returned to the UK and pursued a career in orchestral management, working with many world class musicians. Privately, she keeps the clarinet dust-free and plays with the British Clarinet Ensemble (including tours to Europe and Japan), Liquorice Allsorts (of which she is the sole remaining founder member) and local ensembles. In recent years she got the practice bug and spent hours learning the classical saxophone (yes, really, classical music on the saxophone!), only to get an even more time consuming job! Meanwhile, Liz returned from The North, after playing professionally around Newcastle and Durham and now juggles real work with the far more enjoyable playing for shows which takes up much of her time. She also plays clarinet with the Latimer Wind Quintet and saxophones with a function band and a jazz funk group.

Together, these four musicians make up the Liquorice Allsorts...
